2019: UK restates commitment to credible polls

Published date: November 10, 2018 | Category: Advertisement | Location: , London, United Kingdom

The United Kingdom has restated its commitment to credible elections in the country in 2019.

The British Government also said it was closely monitoring the situation in the country, following concerns about alleged intimidation and interference in the democratic process.

This was contained in a statement released by the UK High Commission spokesperson, Atinuke Adelegan, in Abuja on Thursday following enquiries by Saturday PUNCH.

The statement noted that the British Prime Minister, Theresa May, had raised the importance of credible polls with President Muhammadu Buhari, during her visit to Nigeria in August.

The mission said, “During the Prime Minister’s visit to Nigeria in August, she raised the importance of elections being free, fair, peaceful and credible in order to deliver national stability, peace and prosperity for all Nigerians.

“President Buhari assured the Prime Minister that he was committed to ensuring elections were conducted in line with those principles.”

The British Government, therefore, admonished all stakeholders to respect the rule of law and due process during the forthcoming elections.

It noted that it had earlier endorsed joint statements by the international community on the need for free, fair and violence-free polls.

Meanwhile, a group called New Nation Beginning with Atiku, has said that the Federal Government under the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, will bring real change and development to the country.

The Director-General of the group, Adeshina Abolade, said the former Vice President had seen the lapses in the nation’s infrastructural policy, and was committed to fixing it, if elected.

According to a statement by the group, Atiku is the only candidate among all the presidential aspirants with a solid development and economic blueprint for the country.

It said the ex-VP was not desiring to be president in order to steal as being peddled by his detractors, noting that he would write his name in gold if given the opportunity by the people.

Abolade said, “Atiku is the only man in the country that we know that can give us what we need because if you look at the infrastructure, education and other sectors, things are not developing the way they should.”
